John Deere 316 starting problem

Hi everyone, I just found this forum, and like how informative everyone is. I hope that someone out there can help me with my problem. My 316 has the Onan engine in it, and the past year, every once in a while it won't start, you will turn the key and nothing happens, no click or nothing. A couple years ago I overhauled the engine, replaced the ignition switch, and had to adjust the electric clutch as it was not engaging all the time. So is there a soleniod that activates the starter, or is it built into the starter? I don't have an idea how the electrical system runs in the tractor without taking it apart to trace wires.
So any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Miles

The starter helper kit, as was mentioned earlier, is what you need. I believe it simply supplies a higher flow to the starter. All the 18hp Onans had this problem.

I have 2 300"s and this you may try. First, disconnect the battery. THEN clean and inspect all the electrial connectors real good. There is like a roller bar which is the neutral safety switch that can be adjusted and also a seat interlock that can fail. The starter HAS a soilnoid about center of below battery case. And for some reason JOHN DEERE has known about this problem for YEARS and will sell you a "kit" to make it start easier. But they won"t tell you why it needs it!? My own opinion is they needed heavier duty parts but wanted to save a few cents. Good luck!

Sorry I can"t help you out but I also have a 316 but with a Kohler engine that will not start. My dad put in a new engine a few years ago. The engine first started liking oil out the side. When we called the company that we got it from they told us to take it to a sertified dealer, but the reason that we put a new engine in it is so that we can do the work on it ourselves.

The most recent problem is like I said it won"t start. When you turn the front flywheel the back one won"t turn. This happened after we just rebuilt the carb. So for now it is just sitting in the garage waiting to get worked on AGAIN.

It may be a neutral switch that is not being made. If your shift lever is not completely in the neutral position when you turn the key on to start, nothing will happen. The neutral switch is under the dash and could be getting bad. It could also be a little circuit breaker that is tripping out on you. Good luck, John
