just got through rewiring a mtd 11hp b&s engine thanks to my wonderful dog. only actually had to replace two wires, but now it starts fine, but when key is off, it keeps running. checked everything out, and only thing i can think of, is black kill wire was pulled loose from coil. how about it? also, should red wire from switch to mag have power to it when key is in run position? this is how it was wired from factory, and only thing i had to resplice was black kill wire, and red wire to plug by starter.

just wanted to let everyone know that my b&s 11hp is rewired, and starts AND shuts off just fine. the single black kill wire came unplugged from mag. after removing flywheel cover, i discovered this. respliced, retaped, and zip tied everything and back on the road again. by the way, the dog is still around healthy as ever! thanks to the two that responded so quickly. you guys are great and a great site for help!!!

The red wire to the "M" terminal will be the kill wire. When key is off it shorts the "M" terminal to ground. When "on", it opens the circuit. Chances are your kill wire is damaged in more than one area or your ground from switch is broken. Check ground continuity first, then take black wire at mag off and red wire from "M" on switch, put an ohm meter between them and start tracing wires.
Let us know what you found.

my mower has three wires from under blower housing. two are in a plug by themselves and are for charge circuit, and headlights. the third is black and comes from further back behind starter. you are saying hook the red wire from m term on switch to this single black wire, and this is kill wire? This wire has fire to it when key is in run position, motor running or not, and if i hook it to black kill wire, it will complete circuit, and kill engine correct?

Did you try just grounding the kill wire to see if it will stop? Maybe your wonderful dog chewed through in more than one spot?
