I am rebuilding my K301. I got to the point of aligning the crank timing mark with the cam timing gear. This K301 does not have balance gears. The question is, is there any way I can get the engine 180 degrees out of time? I just second guessing myself!!! Thanks for your help

Anything is possible. BUT, if you line the reference marks up per the manual, then you will have NO problem.

Balance gears..???? Forget about them. Just more things to go wrong. And when those gears come loose, there is a LOT that goes wrong. There is no difference in performance or vibration without them. I took them out of all my single cylinder Kohlers.

I'm sure you can get it anywhere from 0 to 180 deg out of time.

As I recall, there is a timing mark on the cam gear and one on either the crankshaft gear or on the crankshaft itself. They must be lined up or it won't be right. I also recall reference to a primary mark and a secondary mark. If you don't have the balance gears, I think the primary is the one you need to use.

The Kohler book I used for reference gave a very good illustration of how the marks are to be aligned. That's what I went by.

The correct mark (line) is the one on the crankshaft Closest to the gear. It should align with the Dot on the Camshaft Gear when the two are meshed together.
