tec 8hp. hooked wire up wrong and backfired through exhaust without key being on. put in new points and condensor, but now cant get any fire. is it likely that coil shorted and blew? also noticed that only wires coming from engine is the wire to kill block, no wires for charging. this is factory, and has never been torn down, so something cant be missing. so how does it charge, and if it is mag blown, where can i find one?

Need more info, what do you mean by hooked wire up wrong. Which wire? Kind of hard to hurt a motor by hooking up the grounding wire for the coi wrong, unless the coil is external and powered by a battery.

Sorry I didn't see the title of your post.
If your motor had a charging stator coil in it you would have more than one wire coming out from under the flywheel, If you put voltage to the ignition primary wire and it backfired I'm willing to bet you burned out the ignition coil.
Any good small engine shop should be able to get you one.

hooked up (what i thought was) black kill wire coming from switch to the kill block on engine. key was off, engine was stopped, and when i touched this wire to ground block, engine popped through exhaust,as like a backfire. this was before i rewired switch correctly. now i cant get any fire.

Check to be sure (i assume key) switch is working properly, clean points and regap, also be sure that key in flywheel didn't sheer, even if it is half way sheered it will not run. I once saw a castiron flywheel bust in half when a 11hp Kohler back fired, I almost cried.
