I have a Craftsman IC Gold (15.5 HP B&S) that I just picked up used. I accidentally tried to start it while it was in reverse without the clutch in. It tried to start, but after that attempt, it won't even try to turn over anymore. Yargh! Any idea of what might have happened? Thanks in advance.

i have the same tractor. i think that you either blow the starter or you might have blown the solinoid. wait 15 minutes giving the starter time to cool. then try to crank.

Check fuse or wire may have come off safety switch.

Starter gear could be wedged in Flywheel ring gear.

Thanks for the suggestions - just a followup. I got it to start -- but it I have to push the deck engage lever down manually until it hits the end of the shaft, as I turn the start key. The knob naturally sits disengaged about 3/4 of the way down the shaft). So I guess the position that the safety switch engages has changed? Any of this sound normal?

sounds like you may have bent the lever that engages and dissengages the blades, so it will not let the lever rest in its correct position.
