The first KT-17 did not have a fully pressurized oil system. They are the "bad ones". The KT-17 series II has a fully pressurized oil system and are ok. Not all series II engines had an oil filter.

Yes, I know you were asking about A Kohler M18( 18HP Magnum). The Kohler M18 is the follow on engine of the Kohler KT-17 series II. They are basicly the same engine. I have rebuilt three kt-17"s. Two were series II engines. One was set-up for an oil filter and one was not. Both were fully pressurised oil systems. I will have to check the service manuels, but I think the main differance between the KT-17 seriesII and the M18 is the M-series uses a electronic triggered ignition and the KT-series II is points. The M18 may use a bigger carb to make it 18HP. As to oil I use 30w year round though I do not use my KT-17 much in the winter. My engine is on a Gravely 812 which I repowered with the KT-17. I have put a snow blower on it and I may start using a 10w-30 in the winter time.

They biggest thing they did was to put an oil pump in them and went to electronic ignition system. In later years they started using Mahle pistons in them, a lot better piston that the old Kohler pistons. They are an excellant engine, do not be afraid to buy or use anything with one in it.

The Kohler KT-17, KT-17 series II and the M18 all have oil pumps. The KT-17 plain DOES NOT have pressurized oil to the rod journals.

I have one in a Dig-It brand backhoe/loader and it has almost 1200 hrs on it. no service or repair work except to change oil, filter, air cleaner and keep the cooling fins clean. Spark plugs changed at 1000 hrs. Has been a good engine. Gene Davis
