I may have a chance to get an Onan 16 or 18 hp out of a small gehl skidsteer loader. It doesn't run and when it was it smoked pretty bad. What is a ballpark estimate for parts, (valves, pistons, rings, gaskets, rod and main) to overhaul it. The other question I have is will it power a 84" mower deck If I convert an old front mount mower to a trailing mower to pull behind my cub. Thanks

Surprised to hear all the negative feedback. I can see the negative aspect as to parts cost but I thought these were good, tough, reliable industrial engines. Are these the same model Onan used in the JD 318 tractors? The JD 318 used Onan for years. 318 is touted as maybe the best lawn/garden tractor ever built by JD. How can it be one of the best JD tractors ever built had such a lousy engine?

I have a very low opinion of Onan motors, and the only ones i've really seen last at all are the ones doing light duty service. Like the old CCK models running 1800 rpm, running a genset. Or a welder that isn't run WFO all the time..

No matter, your going to need a lot more that 18hp to run a 84" mowing deck worth a darn anyway!!

Robert, We have a Cub Cadet 982 with over 10,000 hours on it, has a P220G engine in it. It has original starter, carb, extrnal parts. Is on 3rd short block. One went, let oil get low, mowed hillside, they don't last long that way, but that was not engines fault. Onan is a very good engine, just pricey.

I've had (3), neighbor had (2), all but one was in HD service. All but one didn't last long, and from what i keep reading on sawmill sites, (Woodmizer used them for a time) they aren't anything to brag about!

None of mine or neighbors went 2,000 hrs. without "major" problems, except the one below, and it doesn't have an hr. meter on it, so????

The one that has lasted, runs at 1800 RPM, and runs a 5KW genset.

The ones doing fairly "light duty" service on sawmills go 3 to 4,000 hrs., and then get replaced, that's sure nothing to brag about!! Keep in mind, band mills make a cut, then go to idle for a time, then back into the cut, so that's not really HD service..

thanks, for the great info. My friend is repowering his skidsteer with a v-twin Honda. I thought he was figuring hiring an overhaul when he said it was cheaper. I had no idea parts could be so expensive. Sounds like Onan could kill alot of sales if they don't change something.

Onan has been high on everything for as long as I can remember and they are still around.

Cummins now owns Onan, and the flat-head engines are a thing of the past, due to emissions requirements, so you're basically dealing with something that's reached "antique status".

The V-twins are odd-firing, and I don't think the run as smooth as the horizontally-opposed twins.

However, the V-twin configuration is needed to keep the width of the engine reasonable after OHV (taller) heads are installed.

Andy,
Unless you have really deep pockets, I would leave this old dog laying. You never want to rebuild and onan without a new oil pump. By the time you buy an oil pump, 2 pistons, 2 set rings, gaskets, bearings, valaves you will have pretty close to $900.00, maybe more, in parts involved. I have never had good luck rebuilding an Onan. By the time you buy all the parts, do the machine work, you can buy a new pull behind mower, complete.

I'd pass on it. Parts are $$$ and can be hard to find. If you need an engine, you can buy a brand new one from www.northerntool.com for less than what a rebuild will cost. I'd get a B&S, they are much better than any Onan, parts are cheap and available.

If you have to go with Onan parts they are exspensive! Seled Power does have engine kits for some Onan engines in thier industrial engine book (will not be on the computer) for quite a bit less.

Until you have bought Onan parts, you have no idea of the meaning of the word "expensive".
