I just rebilt my snappers motor, a kohler k341. I am not getting any spark. The wiring on the tractor was questionable when I bought it, but it ran. I am not good at trouble shooting. I do not believe it is getting spark. I just checked the points and they are adjusted correctly. I was wondering if there was anyone in the central ohio area (I live on the east side)who would be willing to look at it for me for "beer money" I do not have a lot to spend, since I blew my budget on parts and machining.

Kohler K341 in reply to Matt Ott, 01-05-2005 06:04:50
Can someone offer some possible answers? I have a K341 16 HP Kohler motor that has run great (until recently) for years. It cut out at high RPM. I had a local small engine guy look at it. He returned it to me saying it was an electrical problem (not mentioned as to what) and it"s all set now. Well still doing the same after working it a little while. Sounds like the cam is making alot of noise too. Any maybe answers ?

If you have a K341 with battery ignition, The first thing to do is to look at your coil and make sure you have the wires hooked up correctly. The wire from the tractor will go to the plus side of coil, the point/condensor wire goes to the negative side of coil. If you have all that hooked up correct. Then check to make sure you have 12 volts going to the positive side of coil. You said it ran before, so it sounds as though you might have a wire not in the right place. If you do have 12volts to the coil, then check to see if you have 12volts at point lead. 12 volts will come and go as the points open and close, so check both ways before you panic about not haveing 12 volts htere. If you have it to the coil, but not to the points, then you could have a bad coil or condensor. If you do not have 12 volts to the positive side of coil, then you have a wiring problem in the tractor. Let me know if that gets you in the right direction.

I'm familiar with Kohlers, but not Snappers, so I don't know it's age.

To troubleshoot the ignition system we need to know if it's magneto, electronic, or 12 Volt coil ignition.

If you don't have a manual, they can be viewed or downloaded for free at:

the tractor was made in 1982 ( i believe)

it has a 12 volt coil. I have a manual. Electrical skills are something I do not have a bit of. I am 99% sure I have the timing correct, so I think that is not an issue. Thanks for the help.

If it's a 12 Volt ignition system, start by checking for voltage at the (+) side of the coil with a test light. If you have voltage there, move the test light to the (-) side of the coil and turn the engine over with the starter, the test light should flash "ON" and "OFF" as the points open and close.

If the light is either steadily "ON" or "OFF", that will point to the specific problem. Check that out and post back!

Get this figured out and you be a lot more proud of yourself than if you have to have someone come and fix it for you!

the test light flashed on and off when held the the + side of the coil when cranking. I checked and she is getting fuel....spark is good...I did not change anything from the last time I was seeing if I was getting spark...mabe I was getting a bad ground by holding the sparkplug to a head stud. It is getting fuel. Now I am thinking I may have bunged up the timing.....Is there anything else you can think of to check before I pull the whole motor back apart?

Who ther hoss, if you have flashing voltage to the + side of coil then you have coil hooked up backwards. you should have 12 volts at the + side of coil all the time continuasyl. You should have on and off voltage to the - side of coil.

Before you pull the engine out check your timing as specified in Kohler manual and recheck your gap on the points. If points setting is off a bit you wan't get fire at right time to make it run. You can download the manual for free from Kohler and be better off than me trying to explain it here.

Well I got her running. I went back and readjusted the govenor (the problem) and them messed with the carb a bit. She fired up with a little coaxing. I just have to try and fine tune the carb. But with what littel messing I did I got her to run pretty good. Just needs to run at full throttle she needs a litle choke to smooth it out. And a little white smole it visible when start up (to lean?). Is there a recommended break in procedure?
