I have a 1999 Craftsman riding lawn mower. I use this mower year round (summer-yard work; Winter plowing). This tractor has performed flawlessly (until recently), and I keep it maintained.

A few weeks ago the automatic transmission quit working. The brake was starting to vibrate, and rattle, and the speed dropped off, and the mowere wouldn't move. Now the brake feels "loose" and releasing the brake will not engage the trans. I am sure this is a spring or belt thing, but since I don't have another tractor to compare it too, I don't have a clue.

Any help will be appreciated; BGSnow@yahoo.com

Look under the foot rests. There's probobly a Belt routing Diagram there. Make sure there's no Bypass valve open. Brakes wouldn't be stuck, would they?

I have a 20hp Kohler Craftsmen tractor with hydrostatic transmission. Last year it started moving at half speed when engaged at full forward. Thought it was the hydraulic motor, but turned out to be a $25.00 Gates Power-rated drive belt I purchased from my local True Value hardware dealer. The original belt had simply stretched and ran loose on the pulley. (Look under the footrest for the belt diagram). Good Luck.

We have two model 917. tractors, hydro trans, 22 hp and 24 hp. Both slowed down would not pull a grade, popped belts. Nothing apparently wrong, mechanics had no idea. We took the seat off, pulled the back deck/fenders and gas tank. There is was in full view: the transmission mounting strap (motor mount) was broken on one tractor and the strap plus a screw was broken on the other one. We replaced part #140479 (both of ours the same) Strap Torque Mid. Both tractors run like new.
Good Luck!
