I bought a 682 from a private party. It runs good, mower works (with some tweaking), Hydro needs adjustment, steering is loose and some internal shields are missing. The seller said it was 17 hp. It is a Kohler opposed twin. Will the missing shields cause overheating problems? Does anyone have an idea as to when this thing was built?
Thanks!

Go to the IH Registry, they have a chat group you can join and the have listings for years built via the serial number. Cheers Mike

The 682 was introduced in Sept of 1979 and ran through the 1984 Production Year.

The first 682's came with a KT-17 Series I motor.
This motor was used up through S/N #726124. With S/N 726125, they went to the KT-17 Series II Motor.

The KT-17 had some lubrication issues and worked OK as long as you were on level ground. The KT-17 Series II had a revised lubrication system that provided pressuirzed lubrication to the crank journals where the Series I used the "splash" method. The Specification Number on the Kohler can also help you Identify the series. 24000-24299 were series I motors and 24300 & higher were series II motors. When repairing or replacing a KT-17, the series I motor is NLA and will be substituted to the series II.

The KT-17 is a Fan Cooled Motor. It is imperative that the shrouds be in place especailly during warm weather operation. The only way I would run a KT-17 without shrouds, is in the winter time.
Replace shrouds can often be found on Ebay.

Lastly, the Kohler motor built for IH did NOT have an Oil Filter. Oil filters appeared on the Magnum 18 series from Kohler and appeared in later model Cub Cadets.

I hope this helps,

In high heat, it will overheat. To be safe, I would not run it in over 75 degree F weather. You can get the shields on ebay real cheap.

Do you have a series 1 or a series 2 engine. The series 2 has a spin on oil filter and pressure lubrication. The series 1 does not, and will blow up easily if used on hill sides for an extended ammount of time.

Mike, thanks for the info, this thing does not have a filter that I can find, so will be careful. I live in flatland Illinois so it may not be a problem. Do you know of a source for years built by serial number?
Thanks
Bruce
