First time posting here - so here goes:

I bought a John Deere to replace a Yard Man riding lawn mower (which came with the house I just bought and it worked great for about 3 months until this)

It has a 12hp OHV e-start BnS engine that starts but then floods itself out...There is also gas in the oil with evidence of gas on the dipstick...

Here is what happens:

I remove the air cleaner and start it to watch what happens - it starts fine and on the first try - runs for about 15 seconds and then gas/oil starts FLOWING into the intake from a vacuum line (i am assuming this is a crankcase vent line but I am not sure) then it floods itself...the flood from the vacuum line is gas AND oil because of the brown color...I have drained the tank and have fresh gas in it

And if I plug the vacuum line with my finger it will continue to run no problems...but will start to leak out from the pump overflow hole...i think the fuel pump is driven by the OHV assembly...

Any thoughts? I was thinking maybe a stuck float or needle but I am puzzled on the gas/oil mixed when it floods...

First off put a fuel shutoff in the fuel line, or if it already has one, use it(shut the gas off when done mowing, "every time").
Change the oil, to get the fuel/oil mixture out of the engine crank case/block.
Sounds like you have a stuck float/needle valve in the carb which will allow the gas to gravity drain from the tank thru the carb into the intake/cylinder, then leak by the rings and into the crank case, once the oil has been thinned by the gas it dosen't allow proper lubrication and sealing of the rings within the cylinder, combustion pressure can escape by the rings and pressurize the crank case and push oil/gas mixture through the crank case vent hose back into the carb. With any luck this condition will simply flood/stall the engine, but it can do much worse. Can you say "Blow up an Engine"?
You could clean and inspect/rebuild the carb, but you still need to use the fuel shut off.

I will do just that - it does NOT have a fuel shut off and I will install one and see how this goes...Thank DED!
