What ia the deal here. My Old mid 70s MTD model 146-990A will not charge. It has a Briggs model 326431 Type 0228-01. I found a Voltage regulator on ebay for a Briggs Starter/Gen that looks exactly the same and says it replaces Briggs # 295924 or Delco 1118988. I wanted to be sure so I emailed the Guy and he said it was wrong and wanted to sell me an elctronic one. I called Napa and they say the same thig but they did list the one that crosses to the Delco 1118988 for $25. Is it comepletly wrong or do the wires simply go to diferent spots on it making it usable. All the fourth tab on the one on my tractor does is give a place to ground the headlights so it is not nec.I want a reg. that looks pretty much original so the electronic one is not an option. I have grounded the field and the gen. works. My MTD manual give a part # also 725-0390 but no one seems to be able to cross it.

The correct replacement voltage regulator for your engine is part # 297196. Thats from briggs web site, using the engine numbers you provided.

The Delco # they show is 1119577

Any Briggs and Stratton dealer should be able to get you what you need.

NAPA can usually cross either of those numbers, but not always.

Mine just uses the same regulator as any other tractor with starter/ generator. Wires hooked the same. Sounds like someone doesn't know what they're talking about. These are great old tractors - too bad MTD decided to start buiding "throw-aways" instead. Nobody belives me when I tell them this is a MTD tractor (decals painted over).
