My father has a 7hp Kohler on a Troy-bilt Horse tiller that will not run except w/ full choke. It has no power and dies when you take the choke off. It will idle but adjusting the Walbro carb does not seem to help. The carb is clean, spark is good and engine has about 100psi compression. Exhaust is rich but I cannot make it run when I lean it up. Any suggestions or questions?

I am beginning to suspect a weak coil. I inserted a new Champion J19LM plug and cranked the tiller and began to adjust the carb. I was able to move the throttle against the governor and rev the engine but as the engine warmed up it got increasingly harder to do that without the engine stalling and dieing. It would idle fine. I know that the plug could have gas fouled some and I did not pull it to look but I decided to let the engine cool and come back to it later and see if the revs returned for a bit until it got hot.

Had a similar problem with my Homlite generator. Put in a new spark plug and it is running like new. Plugs can get fouled to the point where extra gas (choke) is required in order to fire.

You say that your engine will not run without the choke??That's a fuel problem. And when it does run it doesn't have any power, that is too.In this case.An engine of any kind will have trouble runing with the choke on.Some carbs has a tiny hole in the threads of the bowl nut,if these gets pluged the fuel has a hard time getting in/up the emertion tubes to to venturi to be mixed with air to be burned be the engine.Run a wire through thses holes & tubes.make sure that their clear.

You probably have tiny gasoline passages plugged in the bottom area of the carb, or in the combination plug/jet that screws into the bottom.

The best I can tell all carburetor passages are open. I can shoot cleaner through the jets. I guess I will have to study the carb some more.
