Gentlemen.....

What happened to my 15 year old snapper? I start it, it run very rough (10hp briggs and stratton) and its blowing oil up though the air filter. take the filter out, and it throws oil in a big way. Is my engine toast? or is it fixable...Thanks
Barry

So. What did you do? I inherited an 84 Snapper LT16. Runs fine until you engage the 3 blades - the extra torque immediately empties the oil through the blow bys.

So I'm looking at having someone rebuild it? Or buy new/used?

Did you check to make sure your not overfull of oil?If you haven't run it yet this year, sometimes they leak fuel through the carb over winter and it will fill your crankcase.

Yes it sounds like it could use an overhaul. Your rings are most likely worn out and causing blowby that will push the oil out of the breather. Another thing that could be is a clogged breather. But I'm betting as old as it is that your rings are bad. Good thing is that these engines arent too expensive to rebuild and are simple.
