Hi all...I have a Dixie Chopper with quite a few hours on it. It has a Kohler 22hp engine. It doesn't smoke but the plug on one cylinder fouls constantly. When I pull the plug it's got a gob of gook on it. I first noticed it last fall. It would lose power and stall in high grass and actually kill the engine(usually can mow thru very high grass at top speed). I put a new set of plugs in it this spring (about 3 weeks ago) Yesterday it started doing the same thing. I pulled the plugs and one is as clean as a whistle the other is all covered with gook that I had to pick out with an awl and then hit it with a the wire wheel. I put it back in and it ran like a top. I have noticed I have to add a little oil before each mowing session, but it isn't smoking. Does this sound like rings or valves. And how hard it it to rebuild a Kohler 22 hp?

It is neither valve seals or rings. CV22 Kohlers are notorious for blowing head gaskets between the cylinder and the push rod chamber. O rdo you hear a hissing noise when running or hear it when you shut it off. you can do this with it in the mower, but the muffler bolts can be a bear to get to. I service and sell Dixie Chopper and this is very common problem on the Kohler commands, that is one reason I suspect they have went with Generac engines on a lot of the new ones. They have found they have a lot less problems.

if it runs good and has plenty of power you may just need valve seals.there is one on each intake valve.. lucas
