John Deere Sabre Hydrostat Problems

I'm looking into purchasing a used John Deere Sabre 38" with a hydrostat. It is less than 5 years old and looks new. The only problem is that there something wrong with the transmission. The mower will move, but the hydrostat doesn't seem to be transferring full power. There is no unusual noise or smell to speak of. Could it be something simple?

I trust the person seeling it, it just a case where they don't have time to tinker with it. I have some mechanical skills, and I was thinking that I could fix it myself. I just wanted to seek the advice of someone with some experience. I would really appreciate any help. Thanks.

John Deere Sabre made by MTD. The hydro unit used on these mowers is a "throwaway" unit. When they go bad you replace them. Parts to repair will cost more than the whole replacement unit.

MTD does not build the sabre

Kent is right. You're better off to forget this thing, cause it's gonna cost you more money trying to replace or fix it than its worth.
