Kohler Magmun Engine Repair?

I have a 95' Craftsman Garden Tractor with a Kohler MV20S older cast iron flathead engines. It has developed an oil leak at the base of one cylinder where it joins the block and is smoking pretty good so I suspect a bad gasket and a bad ring (at least).

I paid $2200 for the tractor back in 95 and its performed well until now.

Preliminary estimates are about $500+ to pull the engine, replace gaskets and seals, and maybe rings.

Is this a good engine and worthy of the investment or should I cut my losses and buy a new tractor. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

If you are not going to do any of the repair work, the cost is not at all out of line. You could also check on the price for an outright engine replacement too, and judge that option as well.

Is it worth it to repair this one as opposed to buying a new one? If the rest of the mower is in good shape and has been maintained, there is no reason not to repair it as you pointed out, you have had almost 10 years of use out of it with no problems. Some other items may wear out, such as blade spindles, but they are an expected and rather minor expense.

On the other hand, if there are stress cracks all over the tractor, then perhaps a new one is in order, but most of the newer ones in the low to mid price ranges are not built all that well either.

Given the choices, rebuild it, or re-engine it if the rest of the tractor is in good shape.
