Got a 5 hp horizontal crank engine on my tiller. While using it in my garden during the summer it started acting up,wouldnt run past half throttle for very long.I have disassembled and cleaned the carb and tank good, installed two new gaskets,as well as a new diaphram and changed the air filter and plug with no success. What have I missed here?Oh I did clean the rust off of the flywheel, what little it was.It idles fine forever,in fact I ran almost a full tank out of gas this morning letting it idle.

Make sure your air filter is clean.

Check your valve clearances. They may have tightened up on you. .007" on the intake, .011" on the exhaust with the engine cold.

Sounds like your not getting enough gas to the carb. Pull the gas line at the carb and see what kind of fuel flow you have. Sometimes that filter in the tank gets gummed up and won't let the gas flow. I've found, Over the years to check the simplest things first. Thats usually what they are. Good luck

You didn't mention if you pulled the needle valve on the carb and cleaned that. If you did, or didn't, screw the needle in till it bottoms out and then back it out a turn and a half. That will get you a basic setting for fine tuning. Also make sure you have good tight fit on all your gaskets, an air leak can cause ya trouble too. Also how was the screens on the bottoms of the fuel pipes on the carb? Clean?

You did not say how old this 5hp is. But if it has points, ignition problems can act up as if it were a carb problem. If it does have points replace them and the condensor.

I htink I put this engine on in 94 or 95,I cant exactly recall now.But it has the electronic igniton on it. Iwent out this morning and started it up and took off the gas cap completely and still have the same problem.Just for the heck of it I took a brass wire brush and cleaned the magnet on the flywheel and the coil that had "light" rust on it.Had to come in for a ucp of coffee so I dont know if that will help or not.I do know before Icleaned it I could still get a good shock from the plug wire so I dought that will help.

Check and see if you have a high speed needle valve if so count the number of turns going in, then take of and check for dirt, put back in to same number off turns try starting if the problem is there now turn out one half turn and try starting try this several times, your high speed may need adjust\in and this is what you are doing good luck, this has helped me in the past if you still have trouble I can email you a briggs mechanic email address he is good

The vent in the gas cap may be partly stopped up not allowing it to get enough air to replace the gas being used.
