Paid a few bucks for above mower today for the kids to drive around. We definitely tried it out and it ran around fine. Brought it home and it wouldn't go. Started checking things and eventually took the top off the Tecomseh/Peerless transmission. Two gears were crumbled to pieces and were stuck between the other gears. Pulled them out thinking maybe the thing would run in the other gears. No such luck! The engine runs great and I'd hate to trash the mower. Are parts available for these old things?

I have a JD Model 68 that I need the axle/differential for. The rest of the mower is fine. Anybody got one they want to get rid of cheap?

The model 68 rear engine rider does not use a 2300 series peerless as Lars thinks. A 110 or 112 yes, but not your rider. Check with a JD dealer. There parts online shows that you can get what your need.

Model 68 has a Peerless Model 739 trans. When my son took it apart, it wouldn't turn at all. We fished about a dozen broken pieces of gears out of the trans. still won't turn. I suspect some prior owner took it apart and just slapped it back. (No gasket on trans when he took it apart.) It was just for the kids to drive around, so I don't care if the thing has all the gears., one forward and reverse would be nice. A fella near here offered me an old small rider which he says is in good working shape but needs an engine. He took the engine to put on something else. It was an 8 hp verticle shaft front engine. The JD model 68 has an interesting differential which we might be able to use on the kids' go kart. Also, there's a local lawn mower repair shop selling out next week and maybe I can get a trans there.
