I have a model 2048 scotts by john deere that began running poorly and backfiring. It now is also running as though you were giving it more throttle then less, more throttle then less (uneven). I have replaced the gas, the fuel filter, the air filter and checked for loose wiring. The mower has less than 150 hours. Anyone have any other ideas as to what the problem might be?

Thanks,
Barry

what you have is a fouled carb. the 2048 has the same engine as the L 120. i have just repaired four of these, and three 2048's for the same thing. the 20 hp briggs has a 2 bbl carb, and one side fails. this causes one side to run lean and backfire. sometimes, the muffler glows. the other side runs rich. tried to repair the carb, but this carb is a sealed unti. just replace it and prob should go away.

Define "backfire".

Intake or exhaust.

I think intake. I can see gas fumes or smoke at each backfire when I have the air cleaner removed.

I can feel the backfire through the exhaust, but haven't noticed any flame exiting the exhaust.

Carburetors rarely "go bad" or "out of adjustment" unless they are fooled with.

What's happening is this: the carburetor bowl has water and/or other crud in it. Condensation, not keeping the tank full, buying contaminated gas, using gas with ethanol in it, etc., all cause this to happen.

If the carburetor bowl has a drain, drain it. Drain the gas from the tank, all of it. Add fresh gas and one entire can of B12 Chemtool (any decent auto parts store, do not substitute). Run engine continuously until nearly all the gas is gone. Refill with fresh gas and change the fuel filter.
