JD 318 stalling, wants to kill

My JD 318 with Onan B43G starts and idles just fine. Some days it will mow for an hour with no problems, but some times it wants to kill if I am mowing up hill or through real tall grass. All I have to do is stop forward movement and the engine will rev back up and I can keep going. But that only lasts a couple of seconds and then it wants to stall again. It sounds like it is running out of gas but has a full tank. It will back fire out the muffler sometimes when this happens and it back fires most of the time when it is shut off. Please help.

I had a similar problem and it turned out to be the kill switch in the seat. Depending upon how I would sit on it, i.e. on a hill or reverse direction, it would make contact sometimes but not others.

We ran into a similar problem with our JD318 and B43G.

Tried everything previous posts mention. Also cleaned shut off valve - it was partially blocked. Finally relaced the line from the shut-off valve to the tank (including the part inside the tank).

Line had rotted off inside the tank and was only picking up gas when tank was almost full.

Bern - You could have a valve clearance problem. - Dave

How are the plugs? Have they been changed recently, are they black? Clean all the air intake screens and the air cleaner. Dirty sceens and dirty air filter will make it run hot and rich and make it backfire when you shut it off. As far as shutting down while mowing, I would start looking at the carb, sounds like the load screw might need to be adjusted a lil bit. Ours will shut the blades off or kill the engine sometimes unless you put in in neutral because the seat switch is going bad.
