I have an 18hp Kohler magnum v-twin on a ford lawn tractor. I have excessive oil spewing from under the engine ferrings. At first I thought it was blowing out from a cover in the valley so I cleaned it up and replaced the gasket. I filled it with oil and let it run to warm up and check for any more leaks. It still leaks excessively but I don't know where to start, any ideas?

Had oil leak on rebuilt Mag 18 and it was coming from the gasket in the front where the oil filter lines attach. They can get old and brittle I was told. Just trying to help.

My 18 hp magnum repair book states that the crankcase operates under a slight vacuum, sounds like the crankcase breather valve may be going bad, letting it build up pressure. Gene D.

My first guess would be that you have a bad piston/rings/bore, and excessive blowby is forcing oil out the crankcase breather... the tube that comes out in the top center area of the engine, and makes a "U" bend, and discharges into the cooling stream of the RH cylinder.

Other possiblities would include a bad crankshaft seal under the flywheel, or a gasket leak at the joint of one of the cylinders to the crankcase.
