I have a 1991 John Deere LX172 which needs a new transmission. My question is at what point do you replace the transmission or buy a new tractor. It is a good tractor with a few problems but does its job. What is this worth?

Are you sure that the tractor needs a new transmission? When these fail it can often be just a minor part (such as a gear or even a key) that needs to be replaced. I have had 2 transmissions rebuilt for 2 different JD 116"s. Each was able to be rebuilt for $35 in labor by a local mechanic who does work on the side with a minor part for each one (which I bought through my local JD dealer.)

By the way, if anyone needs a LX172 with a good transmission but a bad engine, I am listing one on eBay tonight for my neighbor. Thanks.

You will have to give J.D, credit for one thing, you can still get parts for the older mowers. If you buy a Craftsman for the cheaper price, thats exactly what you havew, a cheap mower that you probably won't be able to get parts for after a few years,That will make a difference on a mower that you want to keep running, especially if you have one you like.

One of the problems with JD is that their service parts are hideously expensive. You can buy a brand new Sears Craftsman mower for what they will charge you to swap the transaxle.

Depends on how much money you want to spend and if you feel it's worth it. Your transaxle retails new for $993 from JD. A new LT150 retails for $2399. It's your money...

I have the same problem, a 1991 LX-172 with a busted trans. My dealer said he could get me a new one for $449. Everything else on the mower runs fine.
