My JD 318 is loosing power and wants to stall after running for more than half an hour. The pto doesn't pull in when it is hot.

Sounds like your PTO clutch coil needs replaced. I had this same problem with a 317 and that was the problem. It has a short in the windings.

Hi Bern! Sounds like your coil is breaking down aftewr it gets hot. Check for spark right after it quits. If it is the coil, John Deere and Onan have updated the coil and you will have to pull the engine so you can remove the flywheel to update the trigger coil. IF YOU DO NOT, it will continue to quit even with the new coil. I work on John Deere for a living so I have been down that road a couple times. If you tractor has high hours it is possible that the electro-magnet in the elect PTO clutch is getting bad and breaking down from heat from the engine. Setting the air gap may help, but it usally doesn't. Yes, a voltage (DC) drop off(not charging) could also be a suspect here, but you didn't say if you batt light was comming on. If you do have the B43G engine, see if the condensor is mounted back by the coil or under the point cover. If it is under the point cover, heat from the exhaust manifold will over heat it and it will stop working untill it cools down. The B43G engine used points and condensor, while the B218-g had a solid state ignition with a radio suppressor that looks just like a condensor. Hope this helps.

Bern - You may have two problems. The engine power loss/stall problem could be something as simple as the fuel cap not venting properly. Next time it stalls, loosen the cap up and see if that resolves the problem. If it does, you need a new fuel cap.

This symptom can also be caused by the breather tube (and the reed valve if it's a B43G Onan) being plugged.

It could also be caused by a weak coil, timing (again if you have a B43G Onan), fuel filter, or -- the charging system is not developing enough voltage and the PTO clutch is zapping the system.

With regard to the PTO clutch not engaging when hot; a common cause is the air gap setting on the clutch is being out of adjustment.

Click on the link below to my Web site, and click on FAQs. There's information on that page on how to adjust the air gap setting. Good luck. - Dave

Is this an external coil type of engine ? Sounds like you might have voltage/clutch problems.
