PTO Coil overheating and shorting on Bolens 1700 (

I have a 5017H with electric PTO. The last 2 times I have mowed, after about 30-45 minutes, the tractor shuts off. If I turn off the PTO I can restart the tractor. As soon as I turn the PTO on, the tractor shuts off - the circuit breaker (30 amp) is tripping.

If I test the resistance between the PTO coil wire and ground I get 0 ohms (shorted). If I let the tractor cool off for about 30 minutes, I get a few ohms of resistance and everything is fine until it heats up again.

I recently had the motor out and put new rings in and adjusted the timing. I didn't touch the PTO coil (I have replaced it in the past though). This didn't happen before (but it also didn't happen until several full mowings after I reinstalled the motor).

I don't know if it is getting hotter than it did in the past or if the coil is just going bad. I wasn't aware that coils could act this way. Should I replace the coil (it is quite expensive ~$100) and hope it goes away or should this behavour be expected if it is getting excessively hot?

The magnetic coil in the clutch is shorted. You can buy just the magnet, last time I bought one was 2 months ago, and was $160.

If you take the clutch apart, you'll see the magnet will be burned, and black where the windings are.

It takes a coil about every 10 years and adjust the gap in the 3 slots to about .012 I believe.
