I recently took the PTO clutch assembly off my JD212 to repair the backing plate. I don't have a manual for this tractor, but I put the thing back together the same way it came apart. I noticed that if I tightened the bolt that secures the clutch assy to the engine shaft more than a little over hand tight the engine wouldn't turn over. The other thing odd is that the bolt gets quite hot after only a few minutes of operation. Keep in mind, the washer doesn't get hot, only the bolt.

Something just doesn't seem right. I got the tractor used and I don't know if the clutch was removed at some point and not reassembled correctly. It looks like the there should be some sort of collar or something to fill the void between the bolt and the end of the engine shaft, but there is nothing but open space there. The only thing to tighten the bolt against is the washer which sits against the pulley bearing.

Ok, I'm a dummy. Figured it out. I had the drive belt pulley on backwards and it was binding with the clutch housing when the bolt was tightened.

Oh well, life is better now.

Still seems a little odd they never put something in there to better support the bolt though.

The bolt is too long and jams up against the flywheel when tightened all the way down. At finger tight it rubs against the flywheel and gets hot.
Replace it with a shorter bolt.

The same thing happened to me on a 430 Deere.
Been there, done it, got the t-shirt.
