I have a JD 430 L&G with a 60 inch mid mount mower. Yesterday after about an hour of mowing the mower stopped running, then 30 seconds later the engine stopped. I raised the hood and everything looked OK, then cranked it back up and the mower and everything ran just fine. About 30 minutes later the mower kicked off again but the moter didn't that time. Again, I flipped the PTO switch off, then on and it ran fine. I noticed when it was doing this that the battery light on the dash would flash on for an instant. Everything works perfect except for this. I bought the tractor new so I know that there has not been any problem with this before. Do I have an electric pto switch going bad? I would like to find out whats wrong before it completely dies on me at the worst possible time. Anybody have any experience with this? Are these clutches hard to replace? Expensive?

I have a JD318 and experienced a similar problem. I went over a bump, my mower deck quit, and 5-10 seconds the engine quit. During the 5-10 second period, the battery charge indicator light was on. I could not restart the engine until I replaced a blown fuse. Once the engine was cooled, this would not repeat until I had run for awhile. The cause was a misadjusted PTO cluth where the plate was making intermittent contact with the clutch windings and shorting out. I covered the exposed winding with epoxy and ajusted the non-engaged clutch clearance to .035 inch...no problems since. Hope this helps.

Thanks, Tim. Symptoms sound simular to what mine was doing. I mowed grass last week with this mower and it ran fine. So, I will continue to watch this and try to get a better diagnosis or see if a pattern developes. A few days before I first had this problem, I pressure washed the engine and mower. I wonder if water getting into the clutch/pto assembly might have been a problem, and then a few days later after the water dried out good, everything is OK. That's what I'm hoping anyway.

BGuy,
The clutch in my JD318 is cased in phenolic...except for where the clutch plate rubbed the phenolic away before making contact with the clutch coil wires...thus I believe water wouldn't normally be able to get in there. The good thing is that (on the JD318) the clutch is easy to remove, inspect and adjust so it is now part of my semi-annual maintenance process.

Happy JDing!
Tim

I should add...a new clutch for a JD318 is about $245.00....I suspect it is probably more for a JD430. Based on the age of your machine, you might want to check the clutch plate adjustment in the event it is your problem. My machine has 650 hours on it almost all of those with the clutch engaged either mowing or blowing snow. It is much cheaper to fix with epoxy (if needed)and/or adjust than replace! Just my two cents worth!

Hello. It sounds like a defective seat switch. I work on John Deeres and this problem is somewhat common. The battery light could be coming on if the engine rpms are getting to low during the malfunction. Hope this helps

Pat, It acts like a short or maybe the safety switch is kick in and out but I bypassed that seat switch when I bought this tractor in Jan. 1985 and I don't see how this could be th problem but I will check that this connection hasn't come loose. I think it's a short somewhere because of the engine stopping. If it was just the pto kicking off then I would think more along the line of the clutch going out. I tested the battery under load and it tested good. I was kind of hopeing that would be the problem as that's an easy fix ;). If anybody has any thoughts please share them with me, Thanks!

Check your battery connections. How old is your battery? Also do what lucas said. I expect the problem to be electrical in nature. Also the electric clutch could be shorting out, draining your electrical power and killing the engine, if it has a regular points and coil system.

I would replace the battery first if it is over 2-3 years old.

you may want to run the engine with the deck on while watching the voltage with a volt meter. voltage may be dropping to low. if ok you can look elsewhere ,saftey switches ,pto switch... lucas
