I have a 1973 simplicity garden tractor, it has a 18 hp onan opposed twin, it works perfect except for the battery does not charge, any input on this problem would be appreciated. also is the motor supposed to shut off when the oil fill cap is removed while running?

you will have to remove the shield on under side of unit several small 3/8 screws taped into frame then just below the oil cooling fins on the right side you will see some small screws on the out side of the frame they hold parts to the charging system to the back side of the frame with the bottom shield off you can see to remove and check out this could be the problem or their is a in line circuit breaker located down around front right eng mount below cylinder make sure all your grounds and everything else is ok also make sure battery has hot been overheated this will happen if heat shield has been removed also check for shorts unless your eng has been changed I think you have a 19.5 hp onan the very early tractors were 16 hp onan I think yours is 19.5 they called it 20 hp tractor by the way when new your tractor was top of line way ahead of everybody great tr. good luck
