The farm boss said I might look good on a riding mower. I already have a 5 foot mower that goes behind the 9N. Something with a cut of 30 to 42 inches would seem about right and not too complicated. Any suggestions, I have never had a riding mower. Thanks, BC Mike C

Sir, everyone has a preference in riding mowers, but my advice to you is a major brand tractor!

John Deere
Simplicity/Agco-Allis/Massey-Ferguson Cub Cadet

Those three brands built, durable, dependable, good lasting machines backed by good dealers and parts. I wish you well with your decision and hope you get something suited for your use!

If I ever get the chance to buy a new mower it will be a zero-turn. A friend who mows a mixed bag including cemateries swears by Dixon because he needs to do almost no trim mowing.

Mike

Cant go wrong with a JD. If you wouldnt mind something used, I recommend a JD 318 with a 48 inch deck, should be able to pick one up at a good price. We've had ours for 11 years now and use it regularly for our mowing business. It has hyro trans, hydro lift, power steering and can easily be fitted with snow plow (hydro operated of cousre :) or snow blower. Personally I would look for something hydro, 18hp and a 48 inch deck, dont need bigger since you have the 9n.

Bill thanks, I was moments away from posting my question on the N board, but with the info that I have I can start looking and ask more questions as required. We have rows of blueberries that need mowing in between. It is a bit tight with the 5 foot on the 9N but the real problem is compaction. I use the 9N for all the other fields which are more bumpy and I leave the grass longer. BC Mike C

Personally for ease of operation I prefer Hydrostatic drive GARDEN TRACTORS. The transmission is built stronger in the garden tractor thus, lasting longer. And I tend to avoid the belt driven models and go with shaft drive. The reason for this is fewer moving parts (pulleys and pulley bearings). Some of those belts can be a bear to replace. Hydrostatic is also simple - one lever for forward/backward operation. No stopping to clutch. I hope this helps.

Thanks Marlin, I had heard that belts were a problem. I was hoping that some of the folk might have first hand experience with a model they liked or disliked. Was also thinking around 18 horsepower. Does this seem reasonable ? BC Mike C
