My series 1 Kohler 17 HP crapped out in my JD 317 tractor. I want to go to a different brand engine. Is there anything out there that will "drop in"? Im getting weary of the Kohlers.

I lost a rod on one of my QT-17 Bolens mowers.w/ a Kohler 17...twin.. The dealer advised to run these 1/4" over the full mark on the dip-stick.. The other one has been fine .... I replaced the blown one with a Series II--that was 15+ years ago, and it is a strong engine..!! Oh-Yea, it was $1013.oo THEN, and I installed it...!! My older Bolens QT-16 has an Onan in it.I replaced it with a "Big Bore" Onan..it has 1/4" larger Bores...A real power-house..!!! I found out that ALL small bore Onans can be bored to the Large Bore size....SO..Go for it..if you can find a good used Onan...!!

I think Deere Offers a kit to upgrade to a 18 hp Onan . I would imagine its kinda pricy from deere though .

the series II & Magnums are much better engines than the original KT17

I agree with dvogtvpe, the series II engine is a great replacement engine. Check out northern Hydraulics, you can purchase a series II drop in replacement for the JD.

I'd go with the Kohler Magnum, 18 or 20. Nice lil unit, not a bad job to drop it in. Onan engines and parts are pricey!

Don't give up on a Kohler Jim. I'm running a 12 and a 14 h.p., both 30+ years old and still running strong. - J.D. 120 & 140. The 317 was a known "bug" with the 17 h.p. series I. Put in a another 17 Kohler w/pressure lube and you'll be happy.

Uh, yeah, that's what I said. I'd prefer the 18 or 20 Mag, though.
