I have a Sears 18hp gaarden tractor. approx 15yr old. B&S engine. electric pto clutch. The darn thing runs pretty good, but for the life of me I cannot figure out why it WON"T charge the darn battery. The discharging idiot light is always on. I have been playing with it for quite some time every so often. I don't have the book in front of me, but I replaced the fig-a-ma-jig that is mounted on top of the engine.A little sqaure box that has a couple of wires that go to alternator? (it is under the flywheel, round). Like I said I have been playing on and off, and I don't recall exactly what all the parts are called. Sorry. I think the sqaure box is the regulator. I replaced them both. I tried to measure the voltage coming from the alternator, a little tricky, u need 3 hands. I get a little something. I have replaced it. Still nothing. Lights are disconnected. PTO diconnected. Any ideas how I can get his to charge again. HELP!
Thanks

I had a problem with my JD210 not charging and replaced the regulator and still not charging. I decided to change the igintion key out, and it started working again. Could be a bad connection at the switch, or it is burned up were it doesnt even make a connection. You also have to check and make sure your leads coming from the alternator are not shorting to ground. You probably wont be able to tell if the thing is charging just by hooking those three wires from the regulator cause they usually have a swith inside them that tell it to start charging the battery. Hope this helps, Jeremy
