Hi all. I have a 1998 Murray 17 1/2 horse mower. Yesterday, when I tried to start it, the starter turned over a few times, then went 'clunk'. I turned the key a few more times, and it went 'clunk' every time. Okay, so I took the battery off and put it on the charger, which said it was dead. I let it fully charge, and then put it back on the mower about 4 pm. It sat on the mower until about 4:30 pm today, when I tried to start it. It didnt even turn the starter. It just went 'clunk'. Confused, I put it back on the charger and the battery was almost dead. I let it charge for over an hour, and I took it off the charger. When I turned the key, it still didnt make a sound. I put it back on the charger, and let it sit for about 30 minutes. When I went back, I turned the key with the battery still on the charger, plugged in. It didnt make a sound. Now, by all rights, it should have started. What could be wrong?

Thanks,

68 Mag

try taking the plug wire off so it won't crank, reach under the motor see that no belt's are locked up,try turning the crank pulleys to see if the motor is locked up...then take a set of jumper cables hook to a car then hook the gound to the frame of mower then just touch the red to the post on starter to see if it's the motor or starter

Check the gear on the starter it may be broken and jamed in the flywheel or just stuck on the flywheel from being worn.

Lawnmower batteries are all cheap junk...
Pull the plug(s) and try starting, if it turns over, get a new battery.
Put a multimeter on the battery and watch while somebody else turns the key. Battery doesnt snap right back to 12v? Replace the battery.
i've seen tons of these stupid little batteries die, they're hardly worth the effort, but alot better than pull starters.

Hi Mag. This may sound stupid but try to get a hold of something on the eng and try to turn it over, people have changed starters on siezed engines. Also disconnect a battery cable while charging in case the power is going somewhere it shouldn't as fast as you put it in to the battery. If you can get the battery charged, look for a spark when you reconnect the cable.
Good luck.Bob

Follow the positive battery cable until you find the solenoid. One post on the solenoid goes
to the battery, the other to the starter, this may be where your trouble is. Loose or dirty connections here might be your only trouble.
Let us know what you find. The clunk was probably the solenoid. Also make sure the bolts
that hold it to the frame are tight, as it needs to be grounded to work properly. Fish

I have a 1998 Dynamark mower that won't start. I have replaced the starter, ignition, solenoid and battery. I'm not sure if I have all the wires properly connected to the solenoid. On the two terminals I have the thicker red wires. If I'm looking at the solenoid from the seat. The terminal on the left is for the battery. The terminal on the right is for the red wire that goes to the starter, On the post I have a black wire. I still have two wires that I'm not sure about. One is green and the other is a thin red wire.

Any help is appreciated/

trace the wires back. 1 should go to the ignition swith (key). that wire should attach to a smaler terminal on the solenoid. that way when you turn the key on, it opens the circuit in the solenoid and connects power
