I have a 3-year-old Sears lawn mower(19 HP Briggs 42" cut) with a steering problem. I bought a new sector and steering shaft, removed the old one and can't see any clear indication of how to get the sector gear back onto the pitman arm shaft in the correct position. There is an index spline inside the sector, but no corresponding wide spline on the pitman arm shaft. How do you line this puppy up right, aside from trial and error?

If this is the model I'm thinking of,it does not matter,as long as your steering wheel has the splines or the adapt that will allow u to position the wheel at diff angles on the shaft.

I just put the sector in with the gears close to being centered and next connect the tie rod, then do the steering wheel last, the wheel is never perfectly centered, always off one side or the other just alittle.

Good luck,Brad.
