I am looking at a compact tractor. What is considered alot of hours on a 20HP three cylinder?
At how many hours should it be rebuilt?? Any advice appreciated!!

I was a mechanic at a private country club for a number of years, I found that with good maintenance any of the small Jap diesels (Mitsubishi, Kubota, Yanmar) would run 5,000 hours or more with no problem, by that time the machine they were powering was usually shot but the engine was still in fine shape, they last a long, long, time.

To many variables to accurately give a number. It all depends on the useage, care, and service. A big factor that I have seen in determining the hours is whether ether was used to start the engine. Ether seems to cut the engine life in half. I've seen diesels needing repair at 1000 hours and some well over 5000. These were obtained on small three cylinder engines. If the engine in question has good compression, minimal blowbye, then you should be able to get 2500+ hours out of the engine as long you service it at the required intervals and use a good quality oil that is made for diesels. Something equivelant to Dello 300. Hope this helps.
