Over the weekend I bought a Wards walk behind tractor. For power it has a Briggs & Stratton model 14 engine. The tractor is pretty neat. has three forward speeds and one reverse. It is belt drive to the transmission. It has calcium filled 4 x 12 tractor tires and has incredible torque. Any idea who made Wards walk behinds? I'll post a picture later. Any one know what years the model 14 engine was made and what its horsepower rating is?

Thanks.

it is a simplicty made in the 50's simplicty model va 7 hp briggs. I would be interested in the trailer. Check out the simplicty web page and you will be able to find some pictures. I haave 2 of these models very good with the 8 inch plow and more power than you need for most jobs. most of the simplicty attachments will fit. Bob

Help, I have a Wards walk behind tractor also. I would like to find a manual or parts numbers list for it. I am able to get the B&S engine from a dealer but need a belt and possibly a pulley. The only information on a "plate" near the handlebar attachments has the following numbers indented into it: 4X5620 A350961. The rest of the plate is wipped clean. The engine has the following Info on it: model: 130292 Type:0803-03 Code: 81073110. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Wards cannot help, I have tried M.T.D and Murray no help. Sent a message to gravely will send one to Toro. Any suggestions?

I would suspect yours is quite a bit newer than the ones Andy and I have, judging by your engine model number, which uses the current numbering scheme. The old ones were made by Simplicity, possibly the newer ones were as well. Check the Simplicity website for a dealer near you.

See message posted 8/22/2000 for followup. In particular I was wondering if you know where I can research Simplicity tractors... Simplicity sent me a message that stated that they were NOT the manufacturer of my walk behind tractor.

One thing I forgot to mention... I have two attachments a Disc Harrow and a sycle. Both are made by bolens. Does this change anything? I sent a message to Simplicity on Thursday 8/17/2000 but have not heard back yet...

Thanks...

Andy, your trailer set-up looks pretty neat. This is what it looks like with the tiller attachment. Tiller made by Gilson.

Nice picture. It looks like you have wheel weights on it. I have the weights but not on. Do you know what year these were made?

As close as I have been able to determine, the engine on mine was made in 1951. I'm pretty sure it's the original engine.

A gentlemen at M.T.D., one of the vendors that builds tractors/mowers for Montgomery Wards told me that on the B&S engines "code" the first two characters define the year it was made. My engine has a code: 81073110 and he stated that it was built in 1981...

They were made by Simplicity, with some attachments made by Gilson. The B&S Model 14 engine should be a 5 HP engine. I have the same tractor with the Gilson rototiller attachment. Unfortunately some dummy (me) left it out for a few years while I was trying to decide what to do with it, and the exhaust valve rusted up. Now I get to rebuild the motor, and since the tires rotted off the rims, I get to buy new tires too. :o(
