Does anyone Know about these TORO reel mowers or is there a group of people interested in them?

Perhaps you might steer me to others who have an interest in the TORO Professional 58" and the professional 72" mowers. thsi is a bit of a nightmare for maintenance when it is needed complicated to adjust etc but when it is working well there is nothing quite like it. Very little gas used for mowing compared to garden tractors and mine does a 58" cut. I have been wondering if there are other enthusiasts about who might know about these machines. Now granted it has a few shortcomings like small diameter wheels for getting stuck in wetspots but is very stable laterally and is quite effectivre as a mower. oh yeah doesn't cut everything either like a rotary but doesn't throw stones as hard either. ok so 4 horse power and a 58" cut reel type can't beat it the replacement is also toro but costs about 10Grand and is all hydraulic drives etc and 25 or more horse power. Are there any other interested parties out there that you might know of? Thanks

I have a Toro 58 That has been cutting grass ever since 1966. I cut about .65 acres with it. Great machine. I am on my third engine. I replaced it this last time with a Briggs 5 Hp IC (industrial) It has roller bearings and stellite valves an well as a steel block. Since I replaced it in '84 it has shown no signs of wear. I too have problems with it getting stuck in very wet areas. So I added extra wheels. The front drive wheels are tandem. Makes a big difference, but I still can get it stuck if is it really soggy. I plan on keeping it running as long as I live!!!

I would like to find a place to get parts. Toro still carries some. I would appreaciate hearing from you.

Hi

Very similar post to mine of July 5th ... I'm amazed that these super little machines have not developed a cultish following ...

Mine are pretty old, and I'm in the process of tracking down manuals etc.

I imagine that blade and cutting bar sharpening are very similar, as well as lapping between sharpenings. My Nationals, which cost me about $500 used compared to about $5000 new, give a 68" cut with a B&S 8HP ...

If you can't get good Toro info or basic service, a local National Mower dealer may be able to help you out. I hope things work out. Please feel free to e-mail

I just posted amessage to repond to Barry Hayes.
I have owned my mower since new,36 years ago. I have NEVER had the reels sharpened.Toro claims they are self sharpening. The bed knife is very hard. So all I do is adjust the cutters until they are just touching the bed knife.I only adjust them twice a season, usually only an sixth of a turn counter clockwise. Then tap the bolt with a hammer to set. They stay sharp that way. I have replaced a great many parts over the years.
Feel free to email me tleney@ieee.org
