Blue Smoke

Recently, my Dexta has been emitting a lot of smoke when cold. The smoke gets less (but does not stop) when the engine is hot.

The smoke is blue, so my first thought was burning oil, perhaps from worn piston rings. However, the smoke does not smell of oil and I do not seem to be using an excessive amount of engine oil.

I do not have much experience of diesel engines. Is there some other problem which could produce this blue smoke, please?

How much work do you do with your tractor? If just a little now and then, you may just need to give her a good workout. If not then you may have internal problems. Have you ever had the compression checked? If it starts good and runs well, and don't use a lot of oil, I would just run it. It will run you a long time like you have described here on the board. Burrhead will be back soon I hope with a second opinion, he's the Dr.

thanks for the vote Capp.

Could be just be an injector or 2 not spraying right.

It will still crank good and will run smooth as a glass of water and may still need the injectors cleaned.

Thanks Capp and Burrhead, that info is a great relief. The tractor gets very little usage normally so I will try to give it a longer run.

It sounds a good idea to clean the injectors. Is this something I can do myself or do I have to send them to an engineer?

On a separate point, I notice that there seems to be a hole for a starting handle. I do not possess one but is it really feasible to start a diesel engine on the handle or is the hole provided for petrol versions?

Thanks, once again, for all the help.

I think you are refering to the hole in cowl at front.

A loader-drive-shaft would slide thru that hole, thru the pivot pin and insert in a drive flange on the harmonic balancer. Live pump drive.

U wont start it on the handle without a decompression lever to lift the valves off their seats. Injectors have to be cleaned by professionals, do not attempt it yourself as u will just ruin them.

Wayne is right on the hole.

The injectors have to be cleaned and then adjusted to the correct snap pressure.

Thanks to Wayne and Burrhead for this information. It is a bit of a relief to hear that the hole is not for a starting handle. :-)

Although I usually like to do repairs myself, I do not know how to adjust the injectors so I will seek out a local engineer who I can take the injectors to.

Perhaps it will start better, as well, with the injectors sorted out.

Actually, there is a hole for a starting handle on a Dexta. My dad once had a diesel Fordson Dexta and only thing that's left of it (he sold it in late 1970's) is the starting handle whitch came with the tractor.

John,

Interesting. The hole in my Dexta certainly looks like a hole for a starting handle and I had really assumed that it was there for a petrol engined version. However, other posts had convinced me that it had other uses.

Mind you, if Capp expects me to go bear wrestling, I think I will stick to the starter motor. :-)

LMAO--yeah if you can hand crank a Dexta I sure don't want to arm wrestle or shake hands with you.
