Hi there just wondering if anybody out there has experiance of fitting a Ford 590E 6 cyl into the major. The best source for one is out of a clayson 140M combine. My question mainly concerns the sump as I think I will be able to fabricate one out of 3 4Cyl sumps so I can keep the axle radius rod in the right place.Has anybody done this. Are there any other problems. Regards Jimc

We have already put a 590E engine into our Major. We use ours for tractor pulling. And also we own a County Super 6, which has the same engine and gearbox configuration. So we know a little about 6 cyl engines in Majors. A question I would ask you is. Do you want to do a lot of PTO work, if you do the gearbox on the super is not man enough for the job. This is because of the live drive assembly. When we put ours in we did not have to worry about this as it was an early Major with non live drive. Even if dont want to use it for pto work the gearbox sould be replaced as the clutch isnt strong enough. So you should be looking for a non live drive gearbox and also a heavy duty 13" clutch. We used this for a year on our tractor and it worked quite well,as long as you dont turbocharge it as well. The County has used this type of clutch since new and has not given any trouble. Fitting the clutch will require you re drilling the flywheel to accept the pressure plate, as it will have 8 bolt fixings instead of the 6 which is standard on 6 cyl flywheels. The other thing about fitting this engine is that the temperature and tacho cables are not long enough. This can be sorted out by a firm called Speedograph Richfield Ltd. There web site is WWW.spedograph-richfield.com. Hope this has helped you.

Hi Richard Thanks for the information.I have a power major skid unit with livedrive however the Guts of this is going in my Grandfathers Power Major as its pretty worn. I guess the 4 cyl engine was enough for the transmission/ clutch and the reason Ford never offered the option from the factory. I also have a good non livedrive super major skid unit from an old JCB with the heavy duty clutch you mention. We still have a good operationall JCB based on a 63 super major that we still use all the time. I would use the 6 cyl for ploughing matches and shows but not tractor pulling or heavy pto work and would probably need the the livedrive unless i put the engine driven pump from the JCB on it.The question remains on the sump did you cut yours or is the radius rod out the front.I have a P6E27N and remember a few 6 cyl new majors working in the local sawmill when I was young and always fancied one but one that looks right without the radius rod out front and a proper cast sump not the standard aluminium sump on this engine. Regards Jimc

Hello Jimc
Sorry that I forgot about the sump. Our engine still has the aluminium sump on it, we have seen the conversion done this way by a lot of others. It does appear to be the easiest way, but the problem with using the aluminium sump is that it has not got the strength as the cast one, mainly because the bolt holes in the sump dont match the holes in the bell housing. This means that the side frames of the tractor have to be made stronger. I have only seen one person use the cast sump, but they used two to make one. This meant that they had to move the axle back so the a-frame would join the sump. We chose to do it the other way mainly because of the hassle of trying to join all of the pieces together, and making sure it doesnt go like a banana when it cools down from welding. Hope this helps and have a happy new year.

Richard
