Wish someone would help me out - my newly acquired Fordson has many parts missing - ignition and the evaporator are the chief culprits. If there a possibility to use Model A or Model T Ford car parts - is there a possibility of making a battery ignition although this would lower the value of the tractor since it would no longer be original - then the evaporator issue - can it be replaced with a carb and burn gasoline - someone please respond - Jim

What my uncle and I done on our "F" was installed a distribuator off of a farmall "H" on the side of the block. we used 2 gears from a corn planter one on the camshaft and one of the dist. we used the same chain from the corn planter and got the engine in time. we had carb trouble too and we solved it by using the carb off an 18 hp briggs and stratton lawn mower engine its purrs like a kitten and starts on a quater turn most every time Good luck

RL: TY for your reply - So it sounds like your suggesting I go along with the original type mag and magnets - I do have the Fordson coil box - my intake/exhaust manifold is for a Holley 295 vap-
looks like we need to make a conversion plate to fit a carb to the manifold - One other big unknown at this time is the commutator - which looks like it was originally mounted on top of the governor - right/wrong - JS

James,
It sounds as if you have a TACO governor. Ref Commutator (timer) mounted on top. That's OK but, it will require a linkage set up for what ever you use for a carb system. Try getting the unit started first and see how it runs. I would suggest, (especially if you plan to convert a carb to fit), removing the governor and making initial starting much easier. Your may be able to use the roller assembly and timer from the governor or even better purchase a kit from a model T parts supplier. They will have everything you need including an inexpensive set of wires. You WILL need to install a timing retarder rod etc. to save your arm. If you wish, I can supply you with a list of everything you need. Keep the system very basic (original) at first and if all goes well, build from there. What part of the country are you from. Maybe I can suggest someone to help you or a parts house that won't beat you up too badly. This stage is the easiest and cheapest stage of your project. Luckily you have a manifold to start with. Happy to help out. Ron

RL: Problem with my Fordson is that I received it in a basket, it has been sitting outside for the last 40 years - everything that is there is hoplessly rusted tight - now I have the cast Iron front cyl cover off and having a ear welded on the bottom radiator flange - so 2ndly I need to do a valve job - check bearings etc - remove mouse residue from the water jackets etc - its going to be a long process - I do have it inside a shed now - my biggest problem is that I have never seen a Fordson run before - I am only 65 years old - Live in Minnesota - yes please I would like that list of items - appreciate your help - cost is definately a major factor- I am on SS. Jim

Jim,
There's a fellow in Claremont, MN, named Daniel Zilm who specializes in Fordsons. His number is (507) 528-2117.
Good Luck.
Phill

I'm looking for anyone with information on Fordson F model tractors. I am a volunteer at Living History Farms in Des Moines, Iowa. I need to know a source for parts and restoration advice.

I have seen a '22 Fordson with a Model T carb on it. The throttle linkage had to be modified to push-pull. Also, the carb was adapted to the Fordson manifold with pipe fittings. It included a 'street' elbow so the Model T carb would sit level. No, it didn't look factory, but the engine ran OK.

James,
If you have a complete model T ignition system your in good shape. The system is the same. If your Fordson coil box is missing, you will need to adapt the T coil box with some modified brackets. Just make sure there is adequate space between the connectors on the back side of the coil box and the engine block. This can cause a short and make for a bad day when trying to crank it over. (backfire and arm injury) You may wish to use a 12V battery until you determine if you mag is working. (Neg Ground when connecting)and DO NOT connect up to mag stud on the block. This will neutralize the the magnets in the magneto. As far as the carb goes, the Fordson vaporizer can be replaced with a one barrel down draft carb. The old one barrel Ford Falcon carb will bolt on with little or no effort. Depends on which manifold you have. Let me know when you get close to starting and I'll be happy to walk you through it.
