58 Dexta trans question

I am supposed to get a 58 Dexta to work on soon. According to the owner the gear selector either jumps out of gear or jams in position and apparently doesn't make forks move on rails. The stated fix up till now was to take off top cover and "jiggle stuff around until it works again." Don't know for sure exactly which cover he was talking about but I assume top plate where shifter mounts.

Having rebuilt various manual transmissions in the past I figure I should be able to see the problem once I get into it. The question I have is whether the symptoms are indicative of a common problem in these transmissions or whether it is probably going to be expensive, if it is even fixable.

It may not be anything more than a broken detent, wallowed out fork bushing, or broken fork ear. Are these kind of parts still available, and where do I find them if needed?

Thanks in advance for any and all help.....

The tranny end of the shift lever is probly wore out. That is very-very common.

Take only the shift lever off, not the tranny top put the shift rail notches in line for nuetral.

Weld or braze the bottom end of the shift lever and grind it back down smooth til it's about twice the size in diameter that it is now, or until it will fit snug, but loose into the shift rails.
