Dexta transmission woes...

My 1960 Dexta has a transmission problem. Under a load the tractor will slow, as if it is winding up, then pop in the area directly under the shift levers and then free up. Any ideas? It also will come out of high range when going down hill. I don't think these two problems are related, but then I would'nt have to ask you folks if I were an expert. I would appreciate any suggestions.

Sounds like the pinion nut has loosened off. Take the cover off the diff, the one with the lift shafts sticking out. The pinion nut can be tightened with a dull chisel and hammer. If you need the specs holler, I will email or fax a copy.
I wouldn't use the tractor til I checked it out. If it drops the nut, so long pinion and ring gear. Could be the shaft bearings in tranny on the jumping out of gear.
