I'm replacing the hoses for the front bucket of my Fordson Major Diesel and it looks like some of the old fittings are standard plumbing pipe, street els & T fittings. Is this true, or do I need special connectors?
Thanks in advance, AL

You're right. The fitting are standard pipe connectors.

The pipe fittings work fine and are a lots cheaper and easier to locate.

Thanks Burrhead, The only place I found hi pressure connectors at a reasonable price was Northern Tool, but I already had standard pipe fittings. One mechanic said black pipe, not galvanized, but the existing ones look galvanized to me. Thanks again!

Yes, a lot of hydraulics have been plumbed with standard schedule 40 welded "water" pipe I've seen lots of problems come from that action. Leaks, ruptured pipes, and worst of all, fire when high presure oil gets atomized onto a hot manifold etc. Pipe fittings used for high pressure should be schedule 80 pipe and high pressure forged fittings. All this can be had from commercial and industrial plumbing supply wholesalers. You'll immediately see the added stature of these materials yet they are not purpose built hydraulic fittings. You will still need some swivel adapters or flare adapters anyway to make removal of hoses possible without unplumbing the whole system. Check places like Central Tractor (old name) now called Farm and Family I think. Funny, I go into one often and yet don't know the correct name. There are other sources in the links here in YT. What region of the country/world are you in? I too fail to mention that sometimes but it will help the best folks to respond to our needs if we give that info when we're searching something. Whew! sorry for my lengthy follow-up. Bill

Thanks Bill, the old fittings on my front loader appear to be just low grade, standard cast fittings & pipe (different from the backhoe hi pressure fittings.) I priced the heavy duty fittings you mentioned and found that they were more expensive than steel, which were close to the standard ones. I did buy the swivels from Northern Tool.
I'm in northern NJ. There used to be a Ford dealer named "Caldwell Tractor" in Fairfield, NJ that WAS a good source. Too bad that they went out of business. I tried to track down where the parts went, but no luck. I was able to get adapter fittings through "Andover (NJ) Tractor" that allowed me to use cheaper standard hoses on the backhoe as compared to made up Fordson hoses.
