Following a lead today for a possible parts tractor I found it with the "new" owner that plans to dring it around again. I agreed to ask the list if any alternate starters will fit the FMD (his is a 1955). Perhaps one of the Delco diesel starters as used on many industrial and marine engines. If yes are there particular drive pinion specs and starter nose housing that are required? BTW, he has had the Lucas unit to a rebuilder and it was kaput. Thanks in advance.

If this is of any help to you, I installed a starter from a Ford 4000 in my Super Major. The starter fit right in and works perfectly. I had to relocate the tool box, and the dipstick has to be bent slightly to clear the solenoid, and a starter button has to be added to operate the 4000 starter, but otherwise it works just fine.

I have been told by a long-time Fordson owner that a starter from a Ford 3000 will bolt right up. It would be nice to see a list of proven alternate parts since original is getting too hard to find.

Yes it does fit. I guess all 1000 series wil fit
looks a bit weird with the solenoid on the side
(because the starter is mounted on the other side of the engine with the majors, the starter has to be rotated 90 degrees)
I have a picture somewere from a super major fitted with one. Can't find it right now

Regards

The starter from a Dover series engine will fit. Any ford 590E or 2000E industrial engine or "D Series diesel truck is the same. Also the Thames Trader truck Diesel. These engines can be found in New Holland and Claas headers.

TMAC,

Someone has been telling you fairy stories! The 3000 starter fits on the other side of the tractor and has a totaly different rear housing.

Thanks all for this help. I'll pass it all along to the friend that will use it. Of course I'll remember it too in case I ever need an alternate starter for my 1963 FSM. Bill S.
