I have a chance to buy a Fordson diesel tractor (about a 1951). Any info about horse power. durability etc would be appreciated. I intend to use it for stump removal, mowing, and other somewhat hard use. Thanks.

GW,
The tractor you are looking at is a Fordson Major built in Dagenham England from 1952 through to 1964 in various models. They are excellent tractors and would possibly do you well. It would be best for your mowing job to either have a "live" PTO or a "raised" PTO. To check if you have a "live" PTO, look at the HIGH/LOW gear lever. If HIGH is lever UP you have a normal PTO. If HIGH is DOWN you have a "live" PTO. However neither of these items is important if you ensure that your mower is equiped with an "over run" clutch.

On your tractor, either on a flat area under No.1 injector pipe or on the flange behind the starter is a number. Post this and we shall be able to give you exact information regarding HP.

Happy hunting
Brian

Oops sorry, my face is rather red. Above should read: HIGH UP - Live PTO HIGH DOWN - Normal PTO.
Sorry for the bad info.
regards
Brian
