I just bought the major diesel I was asking information about in other postings. Serial # from next to air cleaner is: 1374476, from the serial number listing here in YT, it must be from the year 1956. I was wondering what other information I could find out about it. Some other #s I found: Simms pump: SPE4A7OS380, On the rt side of block: E4, On left side of block: A18Z, with upside down P under it, with 5 under the P. Also, on a lot of the parts, it looks to be stamped with ENFO, was does this stand for? Is this a Perkins diesel (it is 4 cylinder)? If so, is that good? Engine was rebuilt 4 years ago and purrs nicely. Pops right to life and sounds great.

One possible problem, the PTO sounds dry, but smooth when I turn it by hand. I would think it would run with fluid from the rear end/transmission. Is this true? I don't see anyway to check it without taking off the rear plate from around it. There is what looks like a brass plumbing valve to the bottom right of it, not on the pto housing but forward of it, next to it. My only guess is that it allows one to drain hydraulic fluid out.

I have run into some postings asking how to get operator/service manuals, but haven't seen where they may be?

Is there any pictures anyone knows of of details of the dash area and rear end area? This one has 'dash' apart and wires crossing around tractor to hotwire it to run. I have no idea what is supposed to be where or what the wiring diagram is. The generator has been replaced with a chrysler alternator that appears to not be working.

Is there supposed to be a draw bar? This has a half ring in the back with 8 or so holes in it. If it did, what size is it supposed to be and how was it attached? This does look like one used to be there.

Any help on the above would be appreciated. Thanks in advance and for the past help.

Thanks. I found I&T manual on the internet at Intertec for $29.95. I was wondering how good you thought this was and if it had details. Currently I am in need of the wiring diaghram for this '56 FMD. Is it worth it? I have no idea where to begin to look for an original manual other than post it here..
Regards
Bruce

Bruce,
Your Fordson Major Diesel was built in January 1956. The engine block was made on January 18th 1956. On all the castings you will find numbers like your "A18Z" and these are the ones that date the part.

ENFO stands for "English Ford".

It is certainly not a "Perkins". This engine was a Fordson designed unit wholly made at Fords of Dagenham, England. Its design was way in front of the Perkins engines of the time being direct injection. The starting alone put it in a class by itself.

On the left of the dash panel should be a dipstick to show the oil in the rear axle. There should also be a flat lever. This engages the PTO with the clutch down.

Also in this area is an oil filler with levels on the outside of the housing. This is for the gearbox. The oil in here is seperate from the oil in the rear axle.

Sounds like your "drawbar is missing. This is a long flat bar with a "U" piece to fit over the "half circle" and a pin to drop through the holes to lock it in various positions. The flat bar then continues to a clevis about 12" further back.

Hope this helps a bit but there will be much to learn. Keep posting :0)

Thanks.

My seems a bit different. There is a lever on top of the PTO housing at the rear that turns pto on/off. The lever looks like a regular gear shift lever. Wondering if this is an add on. (flat lever left of dash turns hydraulic pump on/off as far as I can tell. There is one extra round lever with a 90 degree attachment point above this flat lever that isn't hooked to anything but looks factory??)

This PTO is my primary area of concern as I want to use a mower. As I mentioned, it sounds dry but smooth when I turn the pto by hand. Is this lubricated by rear end oil? I am thinking of removing the plate from around the pto shaft to see if oil comes out, if not see what is going on inside. I don't want to burn anything up by using it before I know.

Is there a place to buy a rear end seal kit? The axles both leak a bit. Also, the up/down lever for 3 pt drips constantly during use. Hydraulics do seem strong though.

Where do I check level of rear end oil?

I plan to take some pictures tonight or tomorrow that I can attach to help explain some of this stuff.

What was written on the hood, towards the back on the side? I see several pictures here in YT that you can see writing but can't read it. I see letters faded into the paint on mine.

I know I am rambling and asking a lot of questions, hope it isn't too confusing.
Thank you once again.

Bruce

Your tractor has been fitted with a raised PTO. This was an option and it allows you to disengage the PTO and retain hydraulic lift. It is lubricated by the rear axle oil.

The extra lever you talk about should be connected to the radiator shutter. These have probably been removed.

At the rear of the hood there should be a badge "Fordson Major Diesel".
