1960 Dexta hydraulic lift problems.

Hi fellas,

The lift on my Dexta has always acted a little funny (though i'm not laughing...) With my 5 1/2 foot disk installed, the lift will sometimes lift so high, it's up behind the seat. However, when you touch the lever to let it down, it falls down to the position where it normally is. Which is about 4 inches off the ground. This type of behavior is unpredictable. Most of the time, it just doesn' t lift high enough. I took the cover off this past weekend and drained all fluid (90wt. gear oil) and flushed with diesel. However, I didn't clean the inlet strainer because it appears as though you must remove the pump just to clean the strainer! Is this true?

One additional note: In order to connect the arms to the pins on the implement it looks like I have to extend the piston half way out for the arms to reach. This doesn't seem to give me much more room to lift. The boxblade is a little better because the pins are lower to the ground as opposed to the disc. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Chris assuming that the flow control valve is clean and in the "fast" position. The lever should be pushed over to your left. This is the lever just forward of the seat with a linkage over to the hand lift control.

When you have the top off and turned upside down you'll see a rod attached to your lift hand control. It has a spring with a nut on the end towards the front. In the attached pix it is item 23. This is what controls the amount and timing of the lift.

Tighten the nut down onto the rod until snug-NOT tight. you can turn the spring with the spring between your thumb and 1st 2 fingers but it should be fairly hard to turn the spring when right.

You're right you have to pull the pump to clean the P/U screen, but it would be a good idea to clean it and adjust the lift all at one trip in.

If the lift arm linkage are out of length adjustment could cause the piston to be too far out.

The left side lift arm linkage is adjustable too, it just does'nt have a crank on it. Take the bottom clevis off the left side so that the linkage is loose from the lift arm. Turn the linkage in or out til you get the left side arm position where you want it to be.

The left side linkage length should be 21.5" from center of rockshaft pivot pin to the center of the pivot pin on the lift arm itself.

I'm probly forgetting something, but please bear with me I'm getting senile. HTH and if you need more info or cleared up just holler. Jerry

Thanks for the information. Looks like i'll be taking the cover off again this weekend to look at what you suggested. I remember seeing the nut and spring you speak of. I'll most likely pull the pump and clean the inlet strainer as well.

10-4. You probly already know about the o-rings but I'll say it in case you don't.

Be sure you put new o-rings under the top plate. It won't effect your lift if they leak a little, but it will be a continual gooey mess under your right leg that you have to keep washed off if they leak.

Another thing you might want to check while you're that deep in it.

If in the pump end plate you feel a groove trail in the plate where the impellers run you can take them to a machine shop and have them planed back down smooth and flat and it will give the pump back somemore of it's original "umph".

If you have plenty of lift power tho it's not all that important.
