I would like to change the oil(motor) and the gear/hydrolic oil in order to have a good record of time and hours on the oils. What grades/brands work best and what quanities. I live in Redding, California. Average summer temp of 98 degrees. Thanks for your help

Matt,
Oil reccomended for your temperature is SAE 20/30 HD. The reccomended rear axle oil changed in 1959 to the same spec. as above from 90W for all tractors back to 1952.
Be a little careful if you go for a modern multiuse oil as these contain additives for inboard brake lubrication that can cause engine problems in our older tractors.
regards
Brian

For the 90wt. is anyone familiar with a mineral oil for gear drives? My best parts guy recommend it highly & it doesn't smell& works well in the aux. cylinder, cheaper too- Gearbox=4.5 Imp. gallons with pto 4.25 without Rear=9 imp. gallons convert Brit. to American x1.2 if(if not mistaken)MAJOR IMPROVEMENT IN OIL TO ME GOOD LUCK Helton

Helton,
The one thing that can ruin a hydraulic pump or motor is air. Some oils cavitate ie. when pumped they froth and trap air in the oil. As long as your oil does not froth and contains additives to lubricate the gears under load when the teeth engage, then it is fine. Word of warning. If you are recomended to use an oil, ask if they will put the facts in writing. Most oil companies will do this. I had a case where the Shell rep. advised a farmer to use a certain oil in a system which contained hydraulic motors. Within a week every pump and motor failed on the machine and Shell replaced the lot FOC because the rep had given a written recomendation.
Most tractor handbooks will give an oil spec. As long as your intended oil meets or surparses that spec all is OK.
regards
Brian.
