Could anyone tell me how to correctly time a FMD? The number on the starter housing, which I am guessing is the serial number, is 1264744. I think that would make it a 1953 model. I've been reading some responses on here, and I've seen differing opinions on timing the Simms pump. Anywhere from 19 BTDC to 26 BTDC. It is a vacuum type governer. It smokes white/grey/blue (not crankcase oil) all the time like an injector is stuck open or the valve guides are worn. It hits up on all 4 and runs decent. Thinking I might get lucky and find it to be off on timing. Im an IH guy, and new to Fordsons! Thanks!

Timing for the vacuum governor injection pump on majors: before 1308977 - 29 degrees
1308977 to 1425096 - 26 degrees
1425097 to 1481090 - 19 degrees
1481091 to 1578885 - 23 degrees
1578886 to 08b756397 - 23 degrees
Mechanical injection pump (simms) - 21 degrees
good luck

You should have a notch on the crankshaft pully which lines up with a pointer. The pointer can be pressed down into the notch to set the timing. Once set, adjust your injector timing cam set point to line up. Good luck

It is a very long time ago i timed a fordson, about 30 odd years.

what i do remember is that you set the flywheel degrees on the pointer, can't remember the btdc. Then you take the #1 plunger out the the top of IP, turn the fitting back in place , you will need a short injector line with a 90 decree bend in it with the end cut of at a angle, screw that in place of injection line, hand prime continiously while you advance the pump by hand till a drop of fuel appears at the end of fuel line. bolt the pump down in that exact spot, replace the plunger, ready to roll.

Bison, Are you sure that it was a Major that you timed that way? I've never heard of timing one like that. I'm not saying that you're wrong, just that I haven't done it that way before.

Erik, Here's the way that I timed my Majors. There should be a hole in the flywheel housing/oil pan below the back of the right frame rail. Line up the 26* mark on the flywheel with the line in the hole. The mark on the injector pump drive coupling should line up with the pointer on the pump. If it doesn't, loosen the two bolts that hold the coupling halves together and turn it to line the marks up. That should work unless your Major is old enough that the timing mark is on the front crank pulley.

Yea that is the way i remember setting the simms IP on the 4 and 6 cyl fordsons, mind you i lived in the Netherlands at that time, i don't think the tractors where different. The 6 cyl fords where mostly in GMC 6x6 army trucks left there after the war. As i recal there was no timing marks on the pump drive, but maybe the coupler slots where used to play with the timing.instead of the pump, i recal now there is four bolts from i think the bottom up, no slots there.

It is so long ago, maybe the mind is playing tricks on me
