Hi guys, i am currently restoring a 58 PM and was wondering about the paint,I have read the previous articles about the grilles being blue not orange so i am clear on that, What i am unsure of is the injector pump, starter and dynamo because mine have no traces of empire blue on them at all but i have seen restored majors with them blue and some with no paint on them, What are your thoughts on this guys? Many thanks Adam foster

Hi;
The body is Empire Blue, wheels orange - nearest match we use in England is Howard Rotavator orange. Grills DEFINATELY SILVER.
When they came off the line, everything would have been painted blue inc the rubber hoses !!!
I guess that with time & diesel, paint would come off things like the injection pump.
The front wheels for export were tin 16 inch.
The rear wheels could be tin (adjustable width centres) in 36 inch high; or fixed centre 30 inch.
The earlier Diesel Major 1952-57 all had blue grills. Power Major 1957-9 & 1960-3 Super Major all had silver grills. 1963-65 New Performance Super Major had light grey fenders, wheels, seat & grills painted light grey.
We say "light grey" its not the same as the 1000 series that came out in 1965. It was a slightly beige-grey.
Cheers David

All the guys over here are adamant that the grilles were always blue as they came out of the factory,They say it was only the dexta that had different coloured grills(orange).

The grilles should be silver on the power major.
My 59 one is TOTALLY original and the grilles are most definetly a very worn.faded silver. all the other parts you mention would be blue.

does this mean that the wheels/rims should be grey silver also? Not orange/red?

Perhaps the export tractors had blue grilles, certainly not UK ones. Wheels were always orange except for the late New performance majors(63/64) which were grey.

I am in the U.S and I have a Power Major also. My grills and wheels are white and the rest of the tractor is empire blue. My FPM was at the end of run for the FPM so that might have something to do with it. I have also noticed that most of the Majors that were shipped to the U.S. do not have cast front rims and the rear rims are similar to mine. This might have something to do with it also. It is hard to tell what was done almost fourty years ago.

My FPM:

Beautiful U.K Major:

third party image I have looked at lots of pictures of Majors and the whole tractor should be painted blue. The wiring, injection pump, hoses etc were all painted from the factory. I personally do not like that but that is what would be considered a "correct" paint job.

If you do some research on this site majorman talks about being at the factory and seeing them being painted before they were shipped out.

There is an origial, un-touched FPM just down the road from me, the grills are silver on that. Before I left England for down under one of my coustomers showed me a coulor photo of his FPM coming down the ramps off the dealers lorry, that had blue grills AND exhaust! Paint them any thing you want as long as it isnt orange!
