major leaks and smoke

I have been working on a 55 power major for the field and light tractor pulling. My restoration goals were to make it run like a top clean up major leaks and a good farm paint job. It now runs like a top and I jumped to the paint and it looks good. I have 3 leaks one oil from between fan mount and engine, one between base of the power steering box, and one from a cracked plate the trany drain plug is in. My first question was where do I get these gaskets? That was my main concern until 20 minutes ago when a ton of white smoke was blowing out of the exhaust! I ran it only for a minute or so more just to get it in the shop and it sounded like it was running smoothly. My first reaction "head gasket" right? What next?

Sounds like a head gasket, you can open the radiator cap (when it is cold) and start it up. You will see bubbles if it is a bad gasket.
You can also do a compression check which may show you where the leak is.
The fix, if it is a head gasket, is to pull off the head and put a new one on. Previous owner of my Major replace it and said it was really easy. Hope this helps.

When you mean there is a leak between the fan mount and the engine are you referring to the plate behind the gears that bolts up to the frame rails on the tractor??? I am having my FPM engine totally rebuilt at this time and my mechanic said that the new gasket that he received that is between the engine mounting frame on the motor and the block was pretty thin and he had to use a homemade gasket to get the oil to stop leaking when running.

You should be able to find a gasket set on this web site, bare-co, or sparex.

As for the color of your smoke you might wanna search for "white smoke" in the archives on this site or fordson.freeweb.nl. I have seen many troubleshooting guides for smoke on both sites.

Thanks,

Scott
